Europe has a plethora of terrain, diverse culture, rich history, and exceptional cuisine that makes it a perfect destination for nomadic wanderers. But sometimes, choosing the best place in a sea of options alongside the things you need to consider like budget, activities, and attractions can be overwhelming. So on that note, below is a list of some of the most enthralling destinations to narrow down those choices. You can pick one spot or weave them together into a one awesome backpacking journey.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is one of the top destinations for backpacking in Europe not only because it is one of the most inexpensive places to go to but it is also packed with awesome things to do. You can meet welcoming locals, take a walk through the vigorous streets, be fascinated by historical castles and intricately designed cathedrals, or go into a frenzy with its insane nightlife. So if you’re into historical architecture, world-class caliber cuisine, or hot springs, Budapest is the place you want to be in.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is definitely one of my favorite destinations in Europe. No list of outstanding places on this continent will be complete without including this exceptional place. Amsterdam is loaded with an assortment of attractions threaded through by lighted canal ways. If you’re an aficionado of expressionist art, you’ll definitely be in awe when you visit Van Gough Museum and Rembrandt’s masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum. And one thing Amsterdam is known for is to satisfy one’s sordid pleasures. Take a clandestine tour in the Red Light District or have some spliffs in one the city’s popular coffee shops. A place bursting with culture, history, and hedonism.
Paris, France
Paris is a world-renowned city and it is admired for its sophistication. Home to the famous Louvre and the popular Champs-Elysees. People who love literature can read by the shore of Seine as Camus and Sartre divulge their persuading viewpoint on existentialism. You’ll find a plethora of second-hand book shops with regular live music. And of course, there are still those classic attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral and Eiffel Tower. Traveling here might break the bank but your stay will leave a lasting memory that is surely worth every penny spent.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin is one of those places that rose from the devastating ruins and the once less-traveled city became one of the most favored destinations in Europe. After its reunification, backpackers throng the streets because it is much inexpensive compared to its neighboring counterparts. A combination of music venues, bars, and art galleries spread across its finest districts. And if you want to dive into the city’s tumultuous past, there are museums that can quench your thirst for nerve-racking history.
Barcelona, Spain
It is hard not to fall in love with this astonishing city. Barcelona is a modern, avant-garde city brimming with life. You can wander aimlessly around this glorious city filled with historical and modern architectural spectacle like the works of Gaudi and Dali. You can chill at the sandy beach or have a fabulous time in Barcelona’s legendary nightlife.
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague, with all its mystique, is a fascinating city. Located in the heart of the city and arching over the Vltava River is the well-known Charles Bridge. This striking gothic bridge along with its embellishing line of baroque statues is an inviting introduction to the seemingly fairytale architecture of Prague. And if you want to experience the city’s nightlife and the wild adventure that comes with it, check out Wenceslas Square located in the heart of the New Town.
Athens, Greece
Wander in the most thought-provoking and evocative sights of Athens. This historic destination is the symbol of Western Civilization at its finest. The birthplace of some of the greatest minds ever walked this planet such as Sophocles, Pericles, and Socrates. Visit the most awe-inspiring antediluvian ruins –The Acropolis. Located on the top of a rocky crag and serves as a steadfast reminder of the grandeur of ancient Athens. You can also check out different museums if you want to dig deep into the city’s vibrant culture.
